Event Information

The Family Support Webinars are online learning sessions hosted by the Center for Schools and Communities with support from the Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL).

The information for the webinar is below:

  • Title: Absent by Default? Challenging the Myth of the Missing Father
  • Description: Too often, the dominant narrative around fatherhood—particularly for men of color—centers on absence rather than presence. This session challenges the myth of the "absentee father" and explores how cultural stereotypes, systemic barriers, and media portrayals have shaped a one-dimensional view of fatherhood. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how fathers show up in meaningful, though sometimes unseen, ways in their children’s lives. Together, we will examine the roots and real-world impacts of this narrative, highlight the diverse expressions of fatherly involvement, and reflect on strategies to uplift and affirm the authentic stories of active fatherhood.
  • Presenter: Contrell Armor, M.S., Director, Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool Youth Development Network (PSAYDN)
  • Acknowledgement of Participation: An email acknowledging participation will follow the event. No certificates, credits, or stipends are available for this event.
  • Recording: This webinar will be recorded and posted with captions.
  • Accessibility: The Center for Schools and Communities encourages all to participate in our learning opportunities. Please note that Zoom Captions will be enabled for this event. If you have requests for additional accommodations, including having a live captioner present, please contact the Family Support Team five business days prior to the event to ensure that there is time to process requests.
